Start with the pocket

A good beat needs less than you think.

Every lane moves left to right through one bar. Active steps make sound when the playhead sweeps across them. Start simple, listen for the space, then add one detail at a time.

01 / ANCHOR

Place the kick

Put a kick on step 1. Add another where the groove needs a push—often around steps 7, 9, or 11.

02 / BACKBEAT

Answer with the snare

Steps 5 and 13 are beats two and four. A snare or clap there creates the familiar backbeat.

03 / MOTION

Let the hats move

Try closed hats on odd-numbered steps, then use swing and one open hat to loosen the pattern.

No microphone needed. TuneToy creates these drum sounds with the Web Audio API. Your pattern and controls can be saved in this browser, while the sound itself never leaves the device.
