DADGAD Tuner: notes and setup

Tune to D A D G A D for the open, suspended sound of DADGAD. The working tuner on this page is preselected for all six DADGAD targets.

Target notes, low to high: D2 A2 D3 G3 A3 D4

When to use this tuning

DADGAD is valued for ringing open strings and a modal character that does not commit strongly to major or minor. It works well for fingerstyle arrangements, drones, and chord voicings built around D. Three strings change from standard: both E strings move down to D and the B string moves down to A.

String feel and setup

Every changed string moves downward, so a normal acoustic or electric set is usually workable. The first string can feel softer at D4, particularly with a light set. Let all three lowered strings settle and then repeat the full tuning pass before judging the final feel.

How to tune accurately

  1. Press Start tuning above and allow microphone access.
  2. Pluck one open string at a time, starting with the lowest-pitched string.
  3. Follow the named target and move the needle toward the green center. Tap a string pill to lock the target when a string is far off.
  4. Work through every string, then make a second pass because changing one string can slightly affect the others.

Tune the three D strings carefully before refining the others. Their shared pitch class forms the tuning's center, and small disagreements between octaves are easy to hear in sustained chords.

Check the result

The sixth, fourth, and first strings are D notes in three different octaves: D2, D3, and D4. The fifth and second strings are A2 and A3, also an octave apart. Play each matching group slowly and listen for a smooth, reinforcing sound rather than rapid beating.

What this tuning changes

The open strings spell D-A-D-G-A-D, which suggests a suspended D sonority because there is no F or F-sharp to define major or minor. Fretted notes can supply either color while the open D and A strings continue as drones.
