Lower only the sixth string from E2 to D2 while keeping the other five strings in standard tuning. The tuner below opens with Drop D already selected.
Drop D keeps familiar standard-tuning shapes on the upper five strings while adding a low D for drones, wider bass lines, and single-finger power chords across the lowest three strings. It is a practical alternate tuning because returning to standard requires changing only one string.
A regular string set is usually suitable because only the low E changes. The sixth string will feel slightly softer at D2. If it rattles or responds poorly, a slightly heavier low string can add stability without requiring a completely different set.
Tap the D2 string target to lock the tuner while lowering the sixth string. A lock is especially useful if the string starts far from D and could otherwise be mistaken for a neighboring target.
The open sixth string at D2 should sound one octave below the open fourth string at D3. Play them separately and then together: the pitch classes should reinforce one another without a fast wavering beat. The upper five strings can be checked exactly as they are in standard tuning.
Drop D changes the relationship between the sixth and fifth strings from a fourth to a fifth. That creates the low D-A-D stack while leaving melodies, chords, and lead patterns on the upper strings unchanged from standard tuning.
