Open E Tuner: notes and setup

Tune to E B E G-sharp B E so the open strings form an E major chord. The full browser tuner below starts in Open E mode.

Target notes, low to high: E2 B2 E3 G#3 B3 E4

When to use this tuning

Open E produces a bright, direct E major sound for slide guitar, open-chord riffs, and sustained accompaniment. It uses the same interval layout and fingerings as Open D, shifted upward by a whole step, but it reaches that layout by increasing the pitch of several strings.

String feel and setup

The fifth, fourth, and third strings rise above standard tuning, which increases total tension. Raise them slowly in small steps and stop if a string feels unusually tight. On a delicate, older, or lightly built instrument, Open D with a capo at the second fret provides the same sounding pitches and shapes with less added tension.

How to tune accurately

  1. Press Start tuning above and allow microphone access.
  2. Pluck one open string at a time, starting with the lowest-pitched string.
  3. Follow the named target and move the needle toward the green center. Tap a string pill to lock the target when a string is far off.
  4. Work through every string, then make a second pass because changing one string can slightly affect the others.

Confirm the target before tightening any string, especially G#3 on the third string. Alternate among the raised strings rather than bringing one all the way up while the others remain at standard pitch.

Check the result

The sixth, fourth, and first strings should be E notes in three octaves. The fifth and second strings should be B2 and B3. After those pairs agree, add G#3 on the third string; a gentle open strum should produce a stable E major chord without obvious pulsing.

What this tuning changes

The open strings contain only E, B, and G#, the root, fifth, and major third of E. A straight barre keeps those intervals intact at higher frets, making major-chord movement and slide intonation visually simple.
